Primers  for oil color

Gesso – the classical sealer and ground for absorbent surfaces.  Gesso provides the proper surface texture and absorbency for acrylic and oil paint.

Modeling Paste – an extra high viscosity putty for building up heavy textures and sculptural forms that dry to the hardness of stone.  It can be carved or sanded when dry and painted over with acrylics, oils, alkyds or watercolors. When dry is waterproof and non-yellowing.

Preparing size - reduces the absorption of grounds, dries to a clear and transparent ground.  Resistant to weather, can be overpainted immediately with acrylic colors.

Underpainting white gives an egg shell gloss, reduces the drying time of oil paints.   Underpainting white is  a relief for oil colors, may be mixed and overpainted with oil colors.

Talens Flake White  is carbonate of lead. It gives a very opaque paint layer has great adhesion, fast drying and have great surface elasticity.  As lead is easily absorbed by the body, and lead is harmful to the environment, it has to be handled with utmost care.

Solvents  for oil

Talens  turpentine rectified - is used for thinning oil colors,  reduce  consistency of oil color,  allows brush strokes run, may be  used for cleaning materials.

Venetian turpentine increase flow for oil color, and is from natural balsam and turpentine oil. It increases drying time slightly and give the paint more depth and warmth, reduces brush strokes.  It acts like and oil medium and when used with stand oil or sun thickened linseed oil, increases brushability and makes a tougher surface.

White spirit,  odorless white spirit and  odorless turpentine (Shellsol- T) are also available.

Lavender Oil is sometimes preferred by painters who object to the odor  of  turpentine.  It is somewhat similiar to turpentine in its composition and general properties but does not evaporate so quickly .

Mediums  for oil

Cold pressed linseed oil  is made by crushing the seeds under great pressure. Excellent for use as grinding medium in oil paints.  The oil is free from contamination with seeds from weeds and other foreign bodies.

Purified linseed oil an extraction from seed of the flax.  The oil has been highly purified but has not been processed by heat or otherwise basically changed.  When used to thin the body of tube paint it does not caused brushing flow and make the paint level nearly as well as polymerized stand oil.

Boiled Linseed Oil   has small amount of siccatives, it dries slightly faster and increase the flow and fading brush strokes.

Bleached Linseed Oil has the same quality as distilled linseed oil, blurs brush strokes slightly more.

Lavender Oil , Mt Blanc, France has the properties and chemical characteristics similiar to turpentine.  It is considerably more tendency to oxidize when exposed to air because it has a slower rate of evaporation.

Safflower Oil comes from the seed of the Safflower plant.  It is very close to linseed oil in composition and properties, yellows more slowly.

Stand Oil is linseed oil that has been heated in high temperature in the absence of oxygen for a number of hours resulting in considerable thickening of the oil to a fairly heavy body that is slightly sticky. A polymerized  linseed oil , like stand oil acts much differently with the paint pigment than the unprocessed oil, it "wets" the pigment well and has great affinity of it. it has a wonderful tendency to level without showing brushmarks.  Stand oil can be used for making your own painting medium, traditional glacing medium.

Poppy Oil comes from the seed of the white poppy and is very light colored oil. Poppy oil dries slower than linseed oil and does not form as hard a film. It is best used in Alla Prima, Wet-in Wet painting and should not be overpainted in successive layers.

Kremer hard drying oil consists of a boiled mixture of resin with linseed oil.  It paints out fairly light despite its dark color in the bottle and imparts hardness, depth and lustre to oil paints and varnishes.  It may be used as a weather resistance varnish for oil color.

Copal painting medium is a combination of oil and hard resin cooked together and thinned with solvent. Copal, the resin used is an exceptionally hard and insoluble tree gum.   The paint film produced by Copal Painting medium is quite tough and durable.  The advantage of using copal painting medium instead of  just linseed oil and turpentine is to achieve better flow of the paint that does not slide around on the canvas or drip down afterward as in the tendency of raw linseed oil and to avoid overloading the paint film with oil which brings with it the danger of excessive yellowing, wrinkling, and difficulty in painting over.

Talens painting medium is used for tinning with oil colors, made up of vegetable oils, synthetic resins and white spirit.  Talens painting mediums form a flexible film and makes brush stroke run slightly.  It increases gloss , transparency, improves adhesion to lower layer , does not yellow nor affect drying time.  It can be thinned with white spirit or turpentine.

Talens painting medium quick - has almost  the same properties as the painting medium standard except it has a small amount of driers.    Usage and propose is the same as standard painting medium.

Van Gogh H2Oil medium -  is a water thinnable binder using vegetable oil. It is used to thin Van Gogh H2Oil color.  It makes the paint more transparent, fatter , increase gloss and is suitable for glazing techniques.

Alkyd resin is half synthetic medium for oil paints.  It is based on alkylated vegetable oils to produce a harder, less yellowing and more elastic drying oil than linseed oil.

Alkyd medium is used for thining oil colors and reduce drying time.  It is made up of Alky resin and white spirit.  Alkyd medium is a durable medium is suitable for glazing.   Inhances flow properties and transparency.  It is quick drying and resist yellowing.

Olipha quick drying medium and varnish, made from linseed oil and lead oxide.  This medium contains lead and is toxic.

glazing medium made from vegetable oils, synthethic resins and white spirit.  Glazing medium helps in increasing flow specially for glazing in the last layer , increasing flow and thinning of oil.  The paint film remains flexible and brush stroke fades, give the paint more depth and warmth.

Tixogel is a thickener for oil paints.  Yellowish transparent  powder gives paint a buttery consistency and prevents flowing.  Using Tixogel, can build up a considerably thick layer of oil-paint and creates sculptural lively brush strokes.

Talens painting paste helps to increase the amount of the paint while retaining its consistency.

Kremer wax paste oil medium is a mixture of beeswax, stand oil and dammar varnish.  It is use to add to oil paint for impasto mixture ( approx add 10% only).

Varnishes for Oil

Alkyd GG  does not contain siccative and is especially hard and weather resistant.  It is used as a protective coating.

Talens  picture varnish matt or glossy are solution of resins used to coat paintings for protection and to control gloss.   It is durable and does not yellow.   Both the glossy and matt varnish is removable with mild solvent .  It can be thinned with white spirit or turpentine.  Talens picture varnish matt  or Glossy can be applied when paint film has completely dried .

Talens  retouching varnish is used as a temporary protection of oil painting and revival of discolored patches.  It dries in a few hours and does not yellow, and is removable by mild solvent.

Talens dammar varnish glossy- traditional final varnish , gives painting a uniform gloss and protection.  It dries in a few hours and give a high gloss, and may be removable by mild solvents and can be thinned by turpentine.  Present day, most artists would use it as a medium.

Talens dammar varnish mat - is the same as Dammar Varnish Glossy except it gives the painting a unifrom eggshell gloss .  The composition  makes up of dammar resin, turpentine, matting agents -silicas.

Primers  for acrylic color

Gesso – the classical sealer and ground for absorbent surfaces.  Gesso provides the proper surface texture and absorbency for acrylic and oil paint.

Modeling Paste – an extra high viscosity putty for building up heavy textures and sculptural forms that dry to the hardness of stone.  It can be carved or sanded when dry and painted over with acrylics, oils, alkyds or watercolors. When dry is waterproof and non-yellowing.

Additives

Additives change consistency transparency, sheen , drying rate of acrylic paints, but contain no resin “binder”.  Use in small amounts so that adhesion and durability are not affected.

Flow Aid – breaks water tension to improve flow, absorbency and blending of any water base ink or dye.

Liquithick Gel Thickener – thickens and add body to water-based acrylic paints and medium.

Marble Ease – mixes with acrylic paint to enhance paint float, spread and control for marbling technique.

Slow Dri  Gel retarder – is a retarding medium that slows drying of high viscosity acrylics and mediums for easier blending and fine detail work.  It reduces unwanted skinning of paint on the palette.

Fluid Mediums

Fluid mediums modify acrylic paints in a variety of ways but unlike Additives contain  resins,  so adhesion and durability are maintained and enhanced.  They reduce viscosity of heavier paints and gels and do not retain brushstrokes.  They are also excellent glue for collage techniques.

Fluid mediums give artists the ability to create precisely the paint handling characteristics they seek.  They can thicknen, thin or extend volume without alterating the color position, opacity, change the consistency for airbrush, fabric painting and other techniques, slow the drying time; create any surface finish from matte to high gloss or any level in between.

Liquitex Airbrush Medium – prefiltered and pre-reduced for free flowing airbrush technique when mixed with acrylic paint.

Liquitex Gloss Medium &Varnish – all purpose mixing medium for acrylic colors, as well as a final permanent varnish, when dry is non yellowing , clear and flexible. The most popular all purpose mediums for acrylic paints, it increases flow, transparency and gloss.

Liquitex Matte Medium – mix with acrylic paint to create a flat matte surface sheen.  Mix with gloss Medium & Varnish to vary  paint sheen from matte to gloss.

Liquitex Jarpaque – all the properties of Gelexβ medium, with the ligher viscosity of jar color.

Liquitex  iridescent tinting medium – a special effects medium containing titanium-coated mica flakes.  Works well with transparent and translucent acrylic paint.

Liquitex Slow – Dri extender medium -  mix with any acrylic paint or medium to slow down drying time, create transparent colors or washes and improve paint flow in liner work.

Liquitex Fabric medium – controls bleeding on frabic. When mixed with acrylic paint will thin acrylic paints to a dye-like consistency for smooth and even paint flow. Enhances blending, workability, and adhesion of acrylic colors for painting directly on fabric.

 Gel Mediums

Liquitex Liquithick – create a full range of viscosities, from oil like handling of acrylic paint to “ cake” paint.

Liquitex Gel Medium – a gloss medium with the same body and viscosity of “tube color”  and helps to extend drying time of acrylic paint. Maintains heavy body and dries to a clear gloss sheen, mix with acrylic paints for impasto techniques of great depth.

Liquitex Matte Gel Medium – It has the same properties of gel medium except that it dries to a satin matte finish.  The two gel mediums may be mixed to create different degree of sheen.

Liquitex Matte Opaque Extender Gel Medium – a high viscosity form of Matte Opaque Extender that increases or maintains body of acrylic paints.  Economically doubles the volume of acrylic paint without significant change in intensity, opacity or hue.

Liquitex   Glossy Heavy Gel Medium – is a heavy bodied gloss gel extends drying time of acrylics longer than other gels.  Liquitex Gelex extender medium – is an opaque gel that extends acrylic paint volume without changing color position.

Liquitex Modeling paste – an extra high viscosity putty for building up heavy textures and sculptural forms that dry to the hardness of stone.  It can be carved or sanded when dry and painted over with acrylics, oils, alkyds or watercolors.

Liquitex Retarding Medium – slow the evaporation of water from acrylic paint, allowing more time for manipulation of paint.

 Varnishes

Varnishes is to apply on dry paint , is use to protect and change the final aspect.  Varnishes are usually  dries clear , non-yellowing and flexible .  All the varnishes are waterbased, ease  of use and clean-up.    Liquitex has two types of varnishes flexible and rigid.

Flexible varnishes are Liquitex gloss medium & varnish,  matte varnish , and rigid varnishes are high gloss varnish and satin varnish.

Texture Gel Mediums

Texture Gel Mediums – allow artists to create a wide range of special effects.  Liquitex  gel mediums are mixed with acrylic paints to add unique textures and qualities to the surface.

Liquitex Smooth Texture Medium – a heavy bodied medium used to add texture to any painted surface.  It may be mixed with any acrylic to increase density, or applied directly on any surface to build up texture before adding colors.  They can be used alone or mixed with acrylic colors or mediums.  Once dry they are permanent.

Liquitex Modelling Paste – a putty used to build heavy texture. It can be mixed with gel medium for use on flexible support.

Liquitex Ceramic Stucco Texture Gel a high viscosity, low luster sheen fine texture, dries to a light grey matte stucco finish.
