Dry media consist of various kinds of pastels, pencils and crayons. The dry painting and drawing media, with the exception of those having adhesive binders, rely on the roughness of the painting surface called "tooth" for standard charccoal-pastel and drawing papers. Pastel - the use of artist's pigments as pastels is about 200 years old. Pastel paintings from the mid 1700's have come down to us still exhibiting a remarkable freshness of color. Rembrandt Extra fine soft pastels are made from the purest pigments mixed with the finest quality kaolin. They have for years been the most popular artists' pastels in the world due to a number of characteristics and unique features. The pastels are so soft that a large amount of colour is immediately released, and yet hard enough not to powder quickly. The very high color intensity and purity ensure that each piece of work has a brilliant finish. Rembrandt Extra fine soft pastels are available in individual pieces and sets of 15, 30, 30CF, 45 , 60 and 90 in portrait and landscape of full stick and in half stick of 30, 60.
Kremer pigments was founded in 1977 by Dr. Georg Kremer who find it hard to find, historically accurate art materials for conservators. Pigments may be classified according to color, use, permanence, etc. It is customary to classify them according to origin. The following are some examples of inorganic and organic pigments. 1) Inorganic (mineral) - ochre, raw umber, burnt umber, burnt sienna, cadmium , zinc oxide. 2) Organic - gamboge, indigo, madder, Indian yellow, Kremer's organic pigments are synthesized from organic chemicals. They are usually bright, light weight and transparent. On the other hand, inorganic manufactured pigments are industrially made colors containing metals. This makes them usually opaque and heavier than organic pigments. Cadmium Pigments are excellently lightfast, opaque and brilliant with high coloring strength. However, the growing concern about possible health hazards related to the use of cadmium pigments in the coatings industry, chemical companies have long sought after possible organic substitute. Cobalt Blue is a relatively new pigment. Until the early 19th century , it is industrially produced and become indispensable to all artist color including pastel. It is particularly beautiful in water based media, where dark shades can be diluted to a light blue. Cobalt blue is the most expensive pigment and is absolutely lightfast and weatherproof. The finer a pigment is grounded, the more completely and regularly light is reflected, which results in a paint which has a better covering powder and also a better intensity of color. Intensity of a color is amorphous by the choice of pigments. Kremer Pigment is the highest quality of olor that any artist can demand. Conservators use Kremer Pigment to restore art pieces too.
Pressed crayons in colors are used for marking and drawing on rough surfaces. Pressed crayons consist of a mixture of clay, pigment and waxy binder. The dough-like mass is extruded, cut to length, immersed in the melted binder, dried and annealed sharpened in a mechanical cutter and labeled. Lithographic crayons have a definitely waxy composition which is designed to repel water but hold the ink as well as to make it easy to draw with the crayon on the lithographic plate or stone. Flat sketching pencils are made for art work, both fine and commercial and for preparing charts. It permits quick, broad strokes. Compressed charcoal have the general shape of soft pastels , usually comes in the degree of very soft, soft , medium and hard. Carbon pencil is compressed carbon encased in wood to permit pointing in a pencil sharpener. Graphite pencil Willow Charcoal is made by burning the vine material comprising the stick in such a way as to impart writing properties. They are available in different diameters.
