Special Events

Night Owl Egg Hunt - March/April
The Night Owl Egg Hunt is an egg hunt at night. Volunteers will scatter eggs in the field and assist with the passing out of prizes. For more information, contact Erika Strojinc at (847) 850-2133.

Huck Finn Fishing Derby - July
Volunteers help set up registration tables and prizes for the event. Once the Derby is about to start, volunteers take a spot somewhere around Green Lake and will be assigned that area for the event. They will write down the participants' names in that area and will keep track of the number of fish caught by the participants. Once the event is over, volunteers help clean up. Usually volunteers will need to arrive at 7:20 a.m. and will be released around 10:30 a.m. For more information, contact Bryan Adams at (847) 850-2119.

Camping Under The Stars  - July
Volunteers will help set up, cook/hand out dinner, register campers, help with the games/movies, and help with the S'mores. They would be in charge of informing the participants when it is time to do different activities. Volunteers will have the choice of staying overnight, which means supplying their own tent. National Night Out - August
This community event attracts approximately 5,000 residents. Volunteers will assist with serving food, offering directions or assisting with supervision at the moonwalk. For more information, contact Erika Strojinc at (847) 850-2133.

Stampede 5K and 10K Race - September  - Labor Day Weekend
Volunteer positions include race course directors, registration, water table set up and distribution, and finish line coordinators. Volunteers will work from 7 a.m. to approximately 10 a.m. All volunteers will receive a complimentary t-shirt and complimentary pancake breakfast after the completion of the race. Trick or Treat Trail - October
Children walk through a trail with friendly characters in costume and collect treats. Volunteers will be in costume or assisting with the passing out of the treats. For more information, contact Erika Strojinc at (847) 850-2133.

Spot Shot Turkey Shootout - November
Volunteers will tally participants shots made with a basketball from multiple spots around the court and bring the results to the score table. For more information, contact Bryan Adams at (847) 850-2119.

Performing Arts

Children’s Theatre
Volunteers help out as ushers and with concessions. We are also looking for volunteers to assist with set and costume construction. All performances take place at Ivy Hall School. Scout troops and other service groups, 5th grade or above, are welcome. Each volunteer will receive 1 admission ticket to a show. Annual Dance Recital - May
Volunteers high school age or above are needed to supervise groups of children backstage. Responsibilities include supervising a small group of 10-15 children and keeping them entertained before and after they perform on stage. Volunteers high school age or above are needed as ushers and door security to assist with seating and hand out programs. For more information, contact Aly Stanczak at (847) 850-2132.

Summer Musical - July
Volunteers are needed to help out as ushers and with concessions. There are a variety of other ways to get involved with putting the production together by volunteering to be a member of the stage crew, set building team or the hair and make-up crew. Raupp Museum

Volunteers work as collections assistants, office assistants, special event helpers, and research library assistants. For more information, contact Debbie Fandrei at (847) 459-2118.

Sports

Kick-Off Classic Soccer Tournament – August
The Buffalo Grove Kick-Off Classic is a travel soccer tournament for teams in the chicagoland area. The tournament is held the last weekend in August. Volunteers help as field marshalls during games, garbage patrol, registration, and set-up and clean up before and after the tournament, as wellas various other duties through out the day. The tournament is held all day Saturday and Sunday with games beginning at 8 a.m. and games ending around 6:30 p.m. each day. Volunteers can choose from various hours each day to work. Basketball - September
Adult volunteers are needed to coach teams for boys in grades 1 - 8, girls in grades 3 - 8, and participants in high school grades 9 - 12. For more information, contact Chuck Burgess at (847) 850-2125.

Coaches
Volunteer coaches are needed for flag football, girls softball, basketball and soccer. For more information on coaching a team, please go the youth sports section. Contact information for the various team sports programs can be found there.

Environmental Action Team

Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team and Buffalo Grove Park District have teamed together to better our community. We will combine hard work and fun to achieve our projects. Volunteers can make a difference by just giving the simple gift of time, skills or muscle power. For more information on the Buffalo Grove Park District Environmental Action Team, contact Erika Strojinc at (847) 850-2133.

Team Projects:

  1. Habitat restoration at a local park or natural area 

  2. Organize Special collection for hard-to-recycle items and other educational activities in conjunction with Earth Day

  3. Arrange membership and a pick up location for food grown locally by a farm co-op

Electronics Recycling & Environmental Event - April
The Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team is planning an e-trash recycling and environmental education event. Volunteers are needed to take equipment out of the cars. Equipment includes CPUs, monitors, keyboards, speakers, printers, scanners, cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, laptops, gaming consoles and games. Habitat Restoration Project In Buffalo Grove - May
The Environmental Action Team is leading the work at Buffalo Grove’s largest park and natural area in order to create a healthier habitat for our native plants and animals.

Participants should meet at the Spray ‘N Play parking lot, located at 951 McHenry Road in Buffalo Grove. There will be a choice of age-appropriate activities and everyone will have the chance to learn about local plants and wildlife, clean up Mike Rylko Community Park by removing litter and invasive plants, and plant native species to improve biodiversity.

Participants should wear long pants and closed toe shoes, and bring work gloves if possible. We’ll supply everything else, such as garbage bags, tools, water, snacks and camaraderie. For more information, contact Jeff Weiss at (847) 224-0965.
